Get Seriouser!!

I know, I know, “seriouser” is not a word but it is appropriate here.  Yesterday I wrote about “Getting Serious” and I promised we would look at how to accomplish that goal.  It is not complicated.  It is very simple actually.  James spells it out for us in the next four verses in James 4:7-10.

So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.

8 Steps to Getting Serious With God

1.  let God work His will in you.

How do you do that?  It is simple, not easy.  His will is to have a relationship with you.  Not a superficial relationship but a “I depend on you for everything” relationship.  God must come first.  I am not saying you should sell everything and become a monk or monkette if you are a lady but everything in your life should be somehow linked to deepening your relationship with God.  Your work should be top notch as you reflect God at your work place.  Your parenting should be tempered with love and compassion as your children get their image of God from their parents.  Everything should glorify or celebrate your love for God.

2.  resist the Devil.

Some of you may not believe their is a Devil.  I mean after all a little guy with a red suit and pitchfork and a tail is hardly believable.  The Devil’s greatest farce is getting people to believe he does not exist.  The Bible is very explicit about the reality of evil and a Devil that heads it up.  You can learn more about this subject HERE

3.  say a quiet yes to God.

Whatever God asks of us the answer should always be yes.  If I had learned that years ago I would be in a totally different place.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my life now but for a while I was not happy at all.  Once I started saying “Yes” to God my life got a whole lot better.

4.  quit dabbling in sin.

Don’t push the limits.  If you know you are an alcoholic don’t go to bars.  If you are addicted to porn get a program like “Net Nanny” and have your spouse or a close friend make a password that only they know.  I think you get the point.  Remove as many opportunities for sin out of your life as you can.

5.  purify your inner life.

Garbage in, garbage out.  Remember the song, “Oh be careful little eyes what you see.  Be careful little ears what you hear.”  Instead of watching the new episode of “The Girls Next Door” or MTV’s newest reality show, read the Bible or catch a TV pastor like Charles Stanley or Ed Young Jr.

6.  quit playing the field.

You can’t follow two beliefs.  Either you follow God or you follow the world.  You have to decide.

7.  hit bottom and cry your eyes out.

If you have no remorse about the sin that you have committed then you are one of two things.  You are either not a Christ-Follower (maybe you said a prayer a while ago but you didn’t mean it, you were just saying it to get someone off your back or maybe you were just looking for insurance to get to heaven but you didn’t really mean it.  The second thing you could be is that you are so far away from God that your heart is calloused and hard.  If that is the case it will usually take something traumatic to break through.  Both problems can be solved with prayer.  If you are not a Christ-Follower or you are unsure if you are you can be sure right now.  Just read the following prayer to God.  You can say it out loud or to yourself, it makes no difference.  The key though is that you have to believe it and truly want it.  Here is a website that will explain how to become saved or a Christ-Follower.  Go HERE.  If you do decide to trust God for salvation please let me know.  If you are a Christ-Follower but have those thick callouses I was talking about earlier go HERE.

8.  Get down on your knees before the Master.

This is referring to humbleness.  Realizing that you can’t handle it all without God.  Understanding that He is God and you are not.

So there it is, not easy but it is simple.  Everything revolves around your relationship with God.  The more that relationship is important to you the easier it will be to get serious for Him.
